Teetwal is a historic border village in the Kupwara district of Jammu & Kashmir, India, located on the banks of the Kishanganga (Neelum) River near the Line of Control (LoC). Before 1947, the region was part of the princely state of Jammu & Kashmir and there was no India–Pakistan border through the village. During the 1947–48 Indo-Pak War, fighting around Teetwal was intense. After the UN-brokered ceasefire on 1 January 1949, a ceasefire line (later called the Line of Control after the 1972 Simla Agreement) divided the region. From then on, Teetwal remained on the Indian side, while areas across the river came under Pakistan's control (often referred to in India as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK)). Major Wars Around Teetwal 1. Indo-Pak War (1947–48) Heavy battles took place around Teetwal. Control of the area changed hands multiple times during the fighting. The ceasefire line established in 1949 split the surrounding region. 2. Indo-Pak War (1965) Teetwal again became an active military sector. Several military operations were carried out in the area. 3. Kargil Conflict (1999) Although the main fighting was farther east in the Kargil–Dras sector, the LoC, including areas near Teetwal, remained on high alert with military deployments and exchanges of fire. :- Casualties ----------------- There is no officially accepted figure for the number of people killed specifically in the Teetwal sector across all wars. Thousands of military personnel and civilians were affected during the 1947–48 conflict across Jammu & Kashmir, but reliable records do not provide a verified total for Teetwal alone.
